WSNA MEETING

Saturday, October 2, 2004

Hitching Post Inn

Cheyenne, WY

Sue Fabian called meeting to order at 12:15 PM during lunch. Sue read her letter of nomination for Chris Bartholomew for school nurse of the year. No other nominations were presented.

Toot Your Own Horn – all shared what had been going on in their schools and lives.

Minutes were approved as posted on web site. Treasure’s report was not available due to problems with getting on the web site and the treasurer not being present. Suzey Delger reported Jody Martensen had told her the income was not meeting expenses. We no longer have any grants coming in to cover the National Directors expenses and they have been around $6000. We also only get $18.50 per member back from National. We have had fewer donations and had to cancel a meeting due to weather so had no income from that. We used all the scholarships this last year also. Sue will try again to put the treasure report on the web and will e-mail it to the e-mail list. Sharon King moved that the executive board make the financial decision to accept or reject the treasure report and what needs to be done to keep us solvent. Jan Nykodym second and motion past.

Sue Fabian nominated Chris Bartholomew for school nurse of the year. Sharon King moved to close nominations second by Zelma McMullen motion passed and Chris was elected School Nurse of the Year by a unanimous vote.

Suzey Delger clarified web site access.

Nurse’s licenses are due in December again.

Sue Fabian reminded us that we need nominations for the Treasure and Vice President. We will vote on them this spring.

We discussed the new proposal for CPR recertification for coaches. Coaches will be able to recert on line with no skills demonstration. American Heart has an online certification but you still have to demonstrated skill with a certified instructor. Suzey moved that our WSNA president Sue Fabian write a letter to PTSB stating that WSNA does not support the proposal but wants a skill demonstration to a certified instructor to be required. Deidra Hanson seconded and motion past.

Old Business

NASN conference 2004– Connie Avey thought it was very good. The programs were spread out more so it was not so over whelming and were good. Jan Nykodym thought the programs she went to were very elementary and suggested that the level be identified. Lee Ann also thought the programs were disappointing. Sue Fabian said the web site program was good.

Summer Institute – Tamie Walsh reported that there were only 6 School Nurses there and only 4 signed up for the Nurse Day. Due to the limited interest it was canceled. 2 other people said they had trouble getting registered and were told they had to pay full registration to come for the one day. It was agreed that it might be better to put our energy in another area such as the Pediatric conference in Denver, which was very good this year. Suzey received the School Health Services Award at the Summer Health Institute for saving a student’s life. Suzey shared the experience with us and what she did.

Coordinated School Health – Karen Patton reported she had received from her principal a letter that the State is encouraging Coordinated School Health and may mandate in the future. Tamie reported from the state Coordinated School Health Council and the Healthy School meetings she attended that there “could” be funding for all districts from the state for a staff coordinator position if the pilot projects are successful.

Scholarship – Suzey reported Corrine is enrolled and studying hard.

New Business

Legislation – only thing pending is the tort reform on the November election. Discussion was held on what the tort reform would accomplish.

WSNA web site was clarified by Suzey newsletter and workshop brochure will be on web site.

Future meetings – Deirdre moved we rotate the fall meeting around the state and have the spring meeting in Casper for the next 12 months. Zelma seconded discussion was held motion was past. Jan Nykodym volunteered to host fall meeting in Rock Springs. Suzey has found a place in Glenrock just out of Casper for the spring meeting.

Fall In-service day – only 7 districts continue to honor the fall in-service on the first Friday in Oct. Chris Bartholomew suggested a letter to the School Board to get support for releasing nurses one day each fall for the WSNA meeting and workshop. Discussion was held on other ways to gather support.

Committees were convened and reports were brought back to the group.

Spring meeting will be in Casper Suzey will make arrangements for the meeting at the Platte House and rooms at the Paisley Shawl Inn. Meeting will be April 23. Executive meeting will be Friday April 22 at 9 PM. Fall meeting will be in Rock Springs Oct. 7 & 8. Jan Nykodym will make meeting place and room arrangements.

Meeting was adjourned

 Respectfully Submitted
