“Trips to the Hill”: Director visited with Senator Barasso and Congresswoman Lummis and their health representative. Senator Enzi arranged for me to meet with members of his health care reform committee. I presented the 2009 legislative agenda for NASN and discussed the role of school nurses in Wyoming.
Wyoming Director’s NASN committees:
- Executive:
- Met for three days in Las Vegas in March
- Monthly telephone conference calls continue
- My term expires in June, 2009
- By Laws: No major issues to report
- Ethics: No activity this year
- Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments(ANHE):
- In the fall of 2008, Amy Garcia, Executive Director of NASN asked me to represent NASN at a “Unity Meeting” in Oracle Arizona in December. A group of nursing faculty members from the University of Maryland were spearheading efforts to gather members of the nursing specialties to promote healthy environments for nurses and their clients. NASN had been recognized as producing and supporting efforts for healthy schools. The meeting was absolutely amazing with the talent and experiences of those attending like reading the authors form many nursing journals! The best part was that Martha Dewey Bergren also attending on behalf of NASN and it allowed me the opportunity to get to know her and what she is involved with at NASN.
- After the meeting, I have remained on the Steering committee and the Practice Committee. These group meet via conference calls and frequent emails. Subcommittees have formed, the mission statement and vision have been written, brochure developed and there are great plans for the future. Nurses are a formidable voice and if united, can be successful in promoting healthier environments. I will continue in this capacity as long as NASN wants me to.
- The website for this group is e-commons.org and you are welcome to contact me for more information.
Director’s Task Forces:
- Served on a special assignment by president to help identify new leaders in all of the 7 Task forces.
- Position Statements and Issue Briefs: Served on committee
Items of interest to WSNA:
- Changes in the School Nurse of the Year and School Administrator of the Year Awards at the National level are advancing through committees and will be presented at the June board meeting in Boston. The current plan is to move toward recognizing all state winners in an “Excellence in School Nursing Award”. Recognition program in Boston has not been finalized.
- Fiscally, NASN has been hit as hard as everyone else with loss of income from investments:
- a. The Executive Director has “tightened the belt” at the office including some decrease in staffing and close scrutiny of travel, unless it is grant funded.
- b. She and her staff have procured almost one million dollars in grants in the past quarter.
- c. Membership continues to rise steadily.
- d. Increased attention will be focused on book sales.
- e. Revision of the Selekman’s School Nurse Textbook is beginning, as well as updates on several NASN publications.
- The Executive Committee is looking at the Strategic plan for NASN which will be a broader focus but with the same strategic areas.
- Annual conference in Boston will have some changes:
- a. Food provided by NASN as part of the conference costs will be different. The budgets of sponsors have been decreased. Also, regulations by the ANCC, American Nurses Credentialing Center, who gives the CEUs does not allow vendors to pay for food at CEU events. NASN is negotiating with food vendors to be available around the convention center.
- b. Remember to look up syllabus on the net prior to the conference. Syllabus will available also via CD at registration. No printers will be available to print handouts.
- c. NASN is trying to predict attendance at more popular venues to allow adequate space.
- d. Sage Publications, who now prints the JOSN and the School Nurse, are handling the vendors and there is expected to be a significant increase in the number of vendors at the conference.
- d. Please let me know if you are attending the convention so I bring enough scarves for the annual meeting.
My term as Director ends at the time the new director is installed at the January, 2010 meeting. I was in the group that works 2 months longer in this position because the board meeting was moved from November to January during my term.
